LAAFP Lunch Caucus Minutes

MARCH 25, 2023
AMAM, Sheraton Grand Hotel, Sacramento

The meeting was called to order by President Gregory Lewis, MD. Dr. Lewis began the meeting by reading a letter of gratitude from a medical student who had received an AMAM Scholarship in 2022. Attending the AMAM confirmed the student’s medical journey to follow family medicine.

Dr. Lewis welcomed our members and guests. There were 23 persons present, including Executive Director, Roxanne Kuns. All names have been placed on record.

President Plaques were presented by Dr. Lewis to two past presidents in appreciation for their time and effort during their presidencies: Nzinga Graham, MD (2020) and Po-yin Samuel Huang, MD (2022).

Dr. Lewis asked for approval of the minutes to the Member Appreciation Lunch Meeting and Family Event held on December 4, 2022, at Descanso Gardens, La Cañada Flintridge. A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes as printed in the January Newsletter and in the meeting agenda. The minutes were unanimously approved.

Dr. Stacey Ludwig presented the 2022 Financial Recap in preparation for considering the 2023 Budget Proposal that followed. There was a motion to accept the report as printed in the agenda. The motion was moved and seconded and the report was unanimously accepted.

The Budget Committee met by Zoom on January 5, 2023. Dr. Lewis presented the Proposed Budget recommendations as printed in the agenda. It was noted that the budget showed more expenditures than income. Explanations offered were: 1) the committee chose a conservative estimate for membership dues income and 2) additional funds are available in the Vanguard Funds, if needed. The $8,000 grant offered to the CAFP for the special JEDI presentations at the AMAM was clarified as a one-time grant. Various ideas regarding Membership Engagement funds sparked a decision to host a Zoom session at another time to continue the discussion. Following a motion, it was so moved and seconded to accept the 2023 Proposed Budget. A unanimous acceptance vote followed.

The 2023 January – February Treasurers report was presented by Dr. Ludwig. It was a brief report where a motion to accept the report was stated, a motion was declared, as well as a second, to accept the report. An acceptance vote was unanimous.

New Business was dedicated to reviewing the 2023 Resolutions presented in the AMAM Participants Handbook. Members were encouraged to present their personal views at the Resolution Hearings, if desired. None of the resolutions received LAAFP chapter endorsement. A reminder in the agenda noted that the CAFP Board will accept resolutions any time of the year.

FUTURE DIRECTIONS: Dr. Lewis offered his email address (glewis@eisnerhealth.org) to encourage members to submit their ideas on ways to make participation in our chapter events more welcoming and accessible to medical students and residents.

The meeting was adjourned.
