President’s Message – Nzinga Graham, MD

Nzinga Graham, MD

Hello,

I hope everyone is finding some time to connect with family, friends and whatever it is that is important to you.  Now, more than ever, we need to connect to each other. It seems, we are in this for the long haul. What was once a pandemic that would end by summer, now will likely last through this time next year. For sanity’s sake, we need to learn how to navigate this (temporary) new world and connect to other humans, in a safe manner. Whether that is a socially distant outing to a park or other outdoor venue with a friend, or a socially distanced getaway for family, please take some time to recharge and reconnect. I look forward to the day when we can all meet as a group again. It may feel a bit different with masks and space between us, but I know it will be wonderful to see everyone’s faces.

So, AB 890 was signed into law by our Governor last month. (The law that allows nurse practitioners to practice independently) Despite our academy’s best efforts to oppose such a loosely written bill, it prevailed. Thankfully, there is an oversight process that will hopefully establish regulations that protect our patients from harm. Know that our academy is fighting to “ensure those standards and requirements are stringent enough to protect patients and, to the extent possible, limit the creation of two tiers of care.”

I also want to take this time to encourage everyone to vote. As CAFP says it, “Voting is good for your health!” Please make sure your voice is heard. In California, we have a few options – ballot drops off, mail-in or in person voting on or before election day. Please the link for more information on options in LA County and please feel free to display the CAFP poster.
